NASO continues to see very exciting growth in both size and talent among the four elements of the Youth Orchestra Program, with students participating from throughout the region. The North Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestra, the premier level for the most accomplished players, is a full orchestra of strings, winds, brass and percussion. It performs original selections from standard orchestra repertoire under the baton of Myron Flippin. The Philharmonia, a string orchestra which prepares students for the Youth Orchestra, includes strings, piano and percussion. Holly Smardo conducts the group, which is made up of members with prior ensemble experience and who have achieved a certain level of proficiency on their instruments. The Youth Star Ensemble, an orchestra of strings, piano and percussion for the youngest students at a beginning level of performance and instruction, is led by Jana Burton. Brand new for the 2002-2003 season is The Chamber Winds, a woodwind ensemble that will work independently, as well as in conjunction with The Philharmonia.
