Established in 1991, the American Independence Museum is a private, not-for-profit institution whose mission is provide a place for the study, research, education and interpretation of the American Revolution and of the role that New Hampshire, Exeter, and the Gilman family played in the founding of the new republic. Located at One Governors Lane in downtown Exeter, the museum comprises the 18th century Ladd-Gilman House, Folsom Tavern, and over an acre of landscaped property in downtown Exeter. Initially developed for the purpose of generating leisure excursions for the Massachusetts Northeast Street Railway Company, the Park was first opened to the public on August 23, 1902. Within a year it became one of the leading resorts of its type in New England, attracting patronage by trolley car from far and wide. Although the Park has evolved technologically and grown enormously since the turn of the century, it is still famous for its tranquil lakeside setting, flower gardens, tree-lined promenades and exciting entertainment facilities. The Currier is an internationally renowned art museum located in Manchester, New Hampshire. Today, thanks to the Fuller Foundation, the members and other supporters, the Fuller Gardens still represent one of the last working formal estate gardens of the early 20th century. Designed in the Colonial Revival style on a two and one half-acre plot, these Gardens remain a ‘seaside gem’ for the enjoyment of over ten thousand annual visitors.
